What is erectile dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction (or ED or impotence) is a common condition that affects a man’s ability to achieve or maintain an erection during sex. According to studies on sexual performance and men aging, by the age of 50, nearly 50 percent of men experience sexual performance issues. That percentage increases by 10 percent each decade. Erectile dysfunction itself is not considered dangerous, but the condition could be associated with more dangerous issues including systematic vascular disease, heart conditions, renal failure, prostate cancer, depression, and others.
Who suffers from erectile dysfunction?
Though more typical in men aged 40 and older, ED can manifest at any age. Many internal systems must be operating together, effectively, for male arousal: the brain, nervous system, cardiovascular system, hormones, and even emotions can help or hinder during sexual situations. Because so many factors can affect arousal, most — if not all — men can experience erectile dysfunction at one time or another.
What's the rate of success in treating ED?
Erectile dysfunction can be effectively treated around 90% of the time. Too many men wait for years to seek treatment for their ED. This choice can have devastating effects on their emotional health, their relationships, their self-esteem, and more.
What are the signs and symptoms of erectile dysfunction?
Men suffering from ED may experience the following:
Because ED can manifest due to a number of factors ranging from the basic (one glass of wine too many) to the complex (heart disease or systematic vascular disease), experts recommend that men suffering from ED consult with a medical men’s sexual health professional for treatment.

Due to the range of conditions and circumstances that cause erectile dysfunction, there is also a range of treatment options. Some treatments are simple and direct, including medications or stress relief; others require more serious management as part of a comprehensive health plan administered by a general practitioner.
At New England Low-T Center, we work to identify the most comfortable, immediate sources of relief for erectile dysfunction while also coordinating care when a more comprehensive health plan is needed.
Here are some treatment options to consider:
REJUVIwave Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ECSWT)
For more on this therapy please see "REJUVIwave" under our Therapies Tab.
ESWT can help improve erection quality. ESWT works by using high-frequency acoustical waves as a way to activate the body’s own healing process and help it to generate better blood flow in the affected area. ESWT treatments may even help the body to create more blood-vessel pathways as it regenerates between sessions and helps maintain results for extended periods of time.
While each person will have their own level of erectile dysfunction and their own definition of success, there are studies showing symptom improvement in 76% of patients treated. There are some out there who claim that ESWT alone is successful in improving ED symptoms in as many as 76% of patients treated.
Benefits of ESWT
Treatment differs from other procedures for many reasons. It is a completely non-invasive and drug- and surgery-free technique. The sessions treat the root cause by improving blood flow and providing long-lasting patient results. The improvement in erectile function and overall sexual performance after treatment for men has been incredible.
Thousands of men have reported great results:
REJUVIshot Platelet Rich Plasma Injection
For more on this therapy please see "REJUVIshot" under our Therapies Tab.
The REJUVIshot — officially known as the Priapus Shot — is a regenerative injection designed to combat sexual dysfunction. The shot harnesses the power of platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is derived from your own blood, and it’s rich in growth factors.
As a result, it helps promote:
- Increased circulation to the penis
- Improved sexual experience
- Enhanced sexual stamina
- Boost in erectile firmness
- Straighter, more aesthetic erections
Bonus: The REJUVIshot even helps alleviate incontinence.
Oral/Sublingual Medications (Sildenafil (Viagra), Vardenafil (Levitra), Tadalafil (Cialis), and Avanafil)
Oral or sublingual medications work directly on the blood vessels, causing the arteries to the penis to expand. It will cause an erection only when the man is sexually aroused.
Potential Side Effects: Headaches, facial flushing, backache, congestion, upset stomach, bluish tinge to vision or abnormal vision, hearing loss, and prolonged erections (priapism). These drugs cannot be taken with nitrates due to the possibility of decreased blood pressure. Caution should be used with alpha-blockers for prostate enlargement and/or high blood pressure due to the possibility of decreased blood pressure. May cause an erection.
Vacuum Therapy
By withdrawing air with a cylinder placed over the penis, a vacuum is created, mechanically enhancing the flow of blood into the penis. A rubber ring is placed at the base of the erect penis to trap blood and maintain the erection.
Potential Side Effects: Bruising, skin irritation and abrasions, discoloring of the penis, thickening of the skin, vascular damage, pain, and diminished ejaculation. May cause an erection.
